Hayden Linehan, a 2024 graduate of Waterloo High School, received the Section V Athletics Scholarship for baseball, Section V announced on Monday.
As part of its mission to promote excellence in interscholastic athletics while supporting an education based learning environment, Section V offers a $500 scholarship for each sport each season to be used toward future academic endeavors. Winners are selected based on a letter of recommendation from their coach, their high school transcript and activities sheet, as well as their responses to application questions.
Hayden played varsity baseball for four seasons at Waterloo and was also a member of the varsity soccer team. Hayden lists that one of his favorite memories from participating in interscholastic athletics is “beating Geneva in sectionals last year and going out to eat afterwards with his soccer teammates.”
Hayden states the one word that best describes him is “leader.” Hayden plans to continue his education by studying engineering at RIT.
Waterloo Athletics conducted its 58th annual Varsity Club Sports Banquet on June 20 at Club 86 in Geneva.
More than 270 people attended the event that honored Waterloo’s student-athletes, coaches and teams.
Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Christal Kent recognized 14 varsity teams that earned the designation of New York State Public High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete teams. The teams included: boys soccer, girls soccer, girls tennis, boys cross country, girls cross country, girls volleyball, boys golf, girls basketball, boys bowling, boys indoor track and field, girls indoor track and field, baseball, softball and girls lacrosse. Student-athletes who earned individual scholar-athlete status were also honored.

Waterloo Middle School held its annual Spelling Bee on March 7.
Ashton Westmoreland won the Waterloo Middle School Spelling Bee for the the third straight year on March 7.
Westmoreland correctly spelled “saucer” to secure the victory in the 17th round. Seventh-grader Anna Gray placed second in the field of 13 spellers.
Westmoreland advanced to the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee at Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES on March 23. Gray will serve as an alternate to Westmoreland for the regional competition.
Other participants in the spelling bee were: Haylee Albro, Aria Booker, Ava Clark, Alannah Cuffe, Kaiden Druker, Lily King, Zyionna Moore, Olivia Napoli, Sebastian Ostrowski, Abigail Robbins, Abigail Wiglesworth.

The Waterloo boys varsity bowling team made history on Feb. 15 by capturing its first Section V championship.
Waterloo rolled a 983 in the sixth and final game at Roseland Bowl in Canandaigua to overcome a 40-point deficit and claim the Section V Class C title.
Seniors Zachary Manko (232) and Kyle Brown (221) and junior Alexander Rogers (205) all eclipsed the 200-pin mark in the deciding game to lead Waterloo. The Tigers finished with a pincount of 5,745, 10 more than second-place Newark.
“It was amazing,” Waterloo co-coach Russ Gillan said, who is in his 13th season said. “It was a complete testament to all of the hard work that these kids have put in over the last five or six years.”
“I am really proud of this group,” said co-coach Toby Coleman. “As a coach coming into the program, the kids were great at welcoming me and respecting the coaching decisions and strategies. I am just so happy that they were able to stay together and come through with the victory.”
Waterloo trailed Newark by nine pins after the three-game morning session, setting the stage for a dramatic afternoon.
Rogers led the Tigers with a 1,263 total, which was second overall in Class C, and earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team. He also rolled the third-best game of the day, a 258 in the second game.
Senior Chris Hayden compiled a 1,132 six-game series with a 226 high game for Waterloo and junior Nathan Robson finished with 1,129 (210 high game). Manko posted a five-game total of 975, Brown rolled a 700 for four games and Jacob Wolff added 546 over three games. Other team members are junior Spencer Saville and eighth-grader Cooper Rogers.
Waterloo advances to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships on March 8 at Strike N Spare Lanes in Syracuse.
